You can't request a position change, contracts mean nothing, you can't do anything with the press or interact with anyone at all, the players price tag is dependent fully and only on his rating. The rating system seems weird and rather arbitrary. If I play as just the player, I can't get assists and my rating is always shit unless I score 2 or more goals. Secondly, if I play as the whole team, I get subbed off. So I've gone on to create my own player and add him to a team, outside of Career mode. If you select LM, you play midfield but your shooting is shit. If you select LF, you play striker and your passing is shit. There is not option for being anything like that.
There's a lot I hate about player career mode.
